What do I want to achieve this year? How am I doing against my career aspirations and what do I need to do differently or improve to achieve them? I was thinking about these and other questions recently while settling into my new role at AtkinsRéalis. Indeed it's that objective setting time of year for many of us I suspect. It got me thinking about how my motivations for working in planning, energy and infrastructure have changed since starting my career 20 years ago (I still try to fool myself I haven't aged at all during that time!). I still have a passion for helping to deliver positive, meaningful and sustainable development and to ensure I challenge myself and others every day. I still want to be challenged by others, to work hard and celebrate team achievements. I still want to work with lots of amazing people who inspire me. What I realised is different (albeit has increased in prevalence each year I get older) is I now think more about what I can to nurture the next generation of people coming into this profession and to keep them here. There's so much talent, intellect and ambition out there. I've witnessed as much during graduate recruitment campaigns that I've helped to support previously. I'm also regularly impressed by colleagues far younger than me and what they are capable of achieving (and just how often they're smarter than me!). They are the future now. We're going to need all of their help (and a lot more of them) if we are to deliver what's needed and address the climate and nature emergencies.

I realised last night that this month marks 8 years of developing and leading heritage and townscape teams, what have I learnt? 1.You are only as good as the people that you surround yourself with. They can pull you round when you're having a difficult day. When the chips are down, and everyone pulls together, that’s when you realise your team is pretty awesome.2.Give people credit when its due. 3.The value of a network. Both professionally and personally. Don’t be afraid to ask for an introduction, or to see how you can help each other out. 4.You don’t know everything, and there is no harm whatsoever in admitting that. In fact, it makes you stronger.5.Things don’t always go right, but its about how you recover and learn from your mistakes that makes a difference. 6.How I can be my own worst enemy - self-limiting beliefs, imposter syndrome. The importance of stopping, re-centering and re-focussing my mind.7.Be a decent person. Spend time learning about the people that you work with. Ask how their holiday was, how their kids are, build strong relationships.8.Still plenty to learn, but I’m trying my best.9.I love a good team selfie. And ...... writing posts like this are really challenging. (Re-written numerous times, posted, and then ran away).

I left my job at Chevron 4 years ago when Covid was at its peak. You might be thinking, “Were you crazy? You had a killer job!”✅ Unmatched health benefits✅ An income that took 6 years of schooling✅ Endless growth opportunities✅ A super major in the oil industry... I know how valuable these things are to us. When you know that life is short you stop only looking for the shiny details in a place that you spend one-third of your life. I absolutely loved working for Chevron…. my role, the people, the challenges, and the opportunities that were presented. 💯 I chose to leave because I found a purpose where I can finally fill up my cup meanwhile impacting others on a deeper level. I wanted to show up for my children, but this required me showing up for myself first…. So I had to listen to this “calling”. To be able to serve at the highest level, to impact directly from my own life story, and change as many lives as I can from anywhere in the world.🌍 Finally finding my purpose was not an easy path or decision to make but it has been most rewarding decision that I have chosen for my life (besides my family of course)I owe it all to my fitness, health, and body….I owe it to me stepping out of my norm in July 2019 and starting, at the time, a side hustle. It’s now turned into something WAY bigger than I ever expected, especially now launching our sister company 214Fit to help our veterans and our non-profit Warrior Ranch. Where we are transforming the Oil and Gas professional’s life in hope to make a change and shift in arguably one of the most unhealthy industries out there. Yes, we help people reach their health goals but it’s more about actually teaching them everything they need to know about health and fitness to make it a sustainable, healthy lifestyle change.Choosing this trumped everything a 9-5 corporate job could offer around security and stability because everyday I wake up and never feel like I have to show up for a “job”.I get to show up for a purpose, one that I am excited about in every moment.(Even though now, by looking at this picture, I had way less gray hairs 😆). Will choosing to leave a secure, stable, steady career work out for me? I am 100% positive. My confidence comes from:👉 the constant feed of people reaching out to me👉 the thousands of lives I’ve already changed👉 the growth that I’ve experienced in as little as 2 years…👉 and the support I have from my family and the high caliber people that work for me. So, I will leave you with this these questions...What place are you currently making decisions out of? 🤔Security and comfort? Stability and ease?Or purpose and fulfillment? 💯💯#growthmindset #challengeyourself #oilandgas #oilandgasindustry

Today was my first day after maternity leave. 🍼👶I'm stepping back into the professional world at #NatureEnergy Nordfyn and I'm excited about the new challenges and opportunities that await.Welcoming my little one into the world was a life-changing experience. It challenged my notion of identity and career. During my maternity leave, I learned the true meaning of a growth mindset. I discovered that personal growth doesn't pause when you become a parent; it evolves. It's not about choosing between career and family, but about integrating them.As I step back into the professional world, I do so with a newfound appreciation for the value of both parenting and a career. I've refined skills in multitasking, time management, and adaptability that will undoubtedly be assets in my career. These are things that I'll proudly add to my resume, proving that parenting can be a source of strength and a pathway to personal growth. Here's to embracing change, growing as a person, and never underestimating your own potential.#biogas #plantmanager #dad #career

Angus Measurement Services, LP Special Service Group💪Share Encouragement and Success💪It's Monday morning here in the old Permian Basin, on the southwest edge of the Llano Estacado, off the east side of the Frankle City Highway in beautiful Gaines County, Texas as the heat begins to come on. A little over 100-degrees today and cooling off to 95 tomorrow. With the wind blowing that little quarter inch shower we had last week will be gone por haste. My neighbor got the circle around my house planted with cotton last week just before the shower. He grows seed cotton in this 220-acre circle. All he has to worry with me is the dogs. He will be pouring the water to it in a couple of weeks. Maybe we have another shower by then.I turned into a blank slate this morning. Like I didn't know if I was afoot or horseback. I was mindlessly scrolling through my feed when I came across a post that Sarah Stogner had liked, and I stopped are read it. My perspective is looking back on a career in the oilfield that started in 1977. I am the 3rd-Generation to make a living off this industry. In 1979 I landed a job with the pipeline division a major oil company. Well, THE major oil company. I worked for them 11 years then we had a uh...career disagreement. Every two weeks a blue check came in a white envelope. It was a decent check and pretty much all I had to do was show up five days a week for 8 hours a day and wa-la, that blue check showed up. If I did it for a little over 30 more years I could retire. My problem was I had been jumping off garages with a flour sack cape for a while. I did not want to exchange my dreams for a paycheck. I knew what I wanted to do, so I closed my eyes, held my breath and jumped. It was not a soft landing and for over a year I wanted so many times to go back with my hat in my hand and ask for a job. I didn't though and kept soldiering on. In 1993 my life took a 147-degree turn. I started doing something kinda in but kinda out of my skill set. My world got a lot bigger. So far, I have not landed yet. So, I can't tell you how this winds up. In the last year I have learned to speak a new language. I have learned AI is not artificial nor intelligent, IoT covers a lot of things, and our future is digitization.Nothing profound, but a long way from a little tank farm welding shop south of the hackberry grove in Seminole Draw. Setting here looking back over 47 years I am thankful I gave up that paycheck for a dream that became a reality. I have to give credit to the Unicorn because she backed my plays. It will be 34 years in July we partnered up and that has been the key of my success. I remember the wisdom passed along to me about the financial pitfall of trying to retire after getting divorced at 49. I have avoided that pitfall.Best wishes Nick Burns. Keep living your dream.Angus Measurement Services, LPOdessa: 432-332-7200OKC: 405-600-7245
